This can occur where an artist has carved a cameo (bas-relief carving where the pattern subtly stands out from the background) or intaglio (a subtle type of carving or engraving) from the onyx. Nicolo onyx is one variety with a super thin layer of white, semi-translucent, which can even appear as a blue shade against a black background.
