Ground-feeding birds like doves and juncos will be happy to eat some of this. One slight drawback to mesh style feeders is the seed can slip out easier than an enclosed tube feeder. That allows you to get inside the tube from both the top and the bottom, which makes cleaning things out a lot easier! No more angrily bashing the feeder against something hard to try and dislodge a seed clump at the bottom that you can’t reach. I recommend this Droll Yankees model in particular because the base is removable. It is especially notorious for forming hard clumps at the bottom of the feeder. Nyjer seed can become clumpy after getting wet and will need to be changed out to keep things fresh. They have no problem hopping all over this type of feeder and eating in any position. Since goldfinches are used to getting seeds from all sorts of flowers and plants, they are very adept at clinging and balancing, even feeding upside down. The mesh design lets finches feed anywhere they want on the feeder, and many birds can use it at once. This is a common style for feeding nyjer seed. This feeder is similar to the sock style, but obviously much more durable since the mesh is made from metal. Brome has made a name for themselves as having some of the highest quality and best squirrel proof bird feeders out there. If that’s the problem in your yard, or you want to just avoid that from the start, this is your best bet. Some people do have trouble with squirrels chewing through their nyjer feeders or nyjer socks. But of course “usually” doesn’t mean always. I’ve mentioned that squirrels usually don’t tend to like nyjer seed. The socks are replaceable when they wear out. It has two mesh socks for plenty of space for multiple finches, that often will show up to your feeders in groups. This feeder by Kaytee takes the sock-feeder game up a notch by adding a dome at the top that can hold extra seed, and also makes the socks easier to refill. This avoids some of the spoilage and some of the messy clumps that can form at the bottom of traditional metal/plastic feeders. Another thing people like about fabric socks is because they have holes all over, water drains well. When the sock looks like it needs a wash, it’s easy to soak in the sink or throw into the laundry. However many people can get 6-12 months out of it, maybe even more if you do a little sewing and mending. They do wear out much faster than something metal or plastic. Small enough so that the seeds won’t leak out, but large enough to allow the birds to feed. The feeding holes are sized specially for feeding Nyjer. This design lets the maximum number of birds feed at once no matter the seed level, compared to other tubes feeders with perches only in the middle or on the bottom. The ports run all the way from the top to the bottom of the feeder. This tube feeder boasts 20 feeding ports along its 36 inch length. Droll Yankees New Generation Finch Flocker Birdfeeder
